What is DBT?
Dialetic Behavior Therapy was created by Marsha Linehan in order to treat the normally untreatable individuals that meet
the classification of Borderline Personality Disorder. Rather than using traditional therapy that goes to the source
of the problem, DBT is used to allow an individual to learn basic skills to survive life. Accccording to the Lineham
model only after life theartening, and therapy interfering behaviors are addressed, can the true source of the problem be
reached.
What is a Diary Card?
A diary card is where an individual that is using DBT keeps tracks of the skills that they have used or could
have used during a particular day or incident are addressed.
What are Skill Areas?
Skill groups or areas are the basic foundation of DBT treatment. Every life skill taught falls under one of the following
areas:
Core Mindfullness
Emotion Regulation
Distress Tolerance
Interpersonal Skills
Why use DBT?
DBT has been shown to be highly effective in helping Borderlines progress into what teachers call a "life worth living."
Should I stop taking my medication?
Absolutely not. Whether you are seeing a therapist or not, though I do suggest that every person with BPD see a therapist,
you should never stop your medication without your doctor's permission.
What makes you such an expert?
I'm not and I don't claim to be. I have attended hundreds of hours of DBT groups that I believe will help me progress
while I cannot currently afford a DBT group. THIS IS NOT MY PREFERENCE. I AM NOT A THERAPIST.
What if I have a question?
Please submit it on the message board below. I will give me best answer and hope that others participate in
answers as well.
Where else can I learn about DBT?
The best place is from Linehan's own workbook if you cannot get a DBT therapy, but I have suggested several sites that
offer some information.
